Question: A study of a college preparatory mathematics curriculum and the scores on the Early Mathematics Placement Test (EMPT) looked at a group of 138 juniors and 40 sophomores who are enrolled in either the Algebra II or Honors Algebra II course. The investigators compared the students grade in the course (A, B, C, D or F) with their placement level from the EMPT (2-5 with 2 being the highest). Result: "Our data suggest that the current mathematics curriculum is effective for preparing students for college level mathematics." Is this an observational study or an experiment? Why? What are the explanatory and response variables? What might be some lurking variables?
