Question:

A promoter of new bands has a registered list of customers which includes their past purchases and also whether they like or dislike certain groups both old and new.

From this list he randomly selects 400 people who he sends a CD of songs by the new band ‘Money for the Meter’ to, and asks for their feedback on whether they would buy the album. All of the people respond and 96 said they would consider buying the album.

  1. Assuming the sample reflects the population on the promoter’s list calculate 95%, 97.5% and 99% confidence intervals for the proportion of people who would consider purchasing the album.
The promoter analyses the list of the 400 people and considers their other preferences, in particular whether they like the band ‘The Mothers of Invention’. Of the 400 people on the list 150 people were fans of ‘The Mothers of Invention’ and 234 people disliked both ‘Money for the Meter’ and ‘The Mothers of Invention’.
  2. Construct a Venn Diagram of the above data.
  3. Assuming the sample reflects the population on the promoter’s list calculate 95%, 97.5% and 99% confidence intervals for the proportion of people who would consider purchasing the album by ‘Money for the Meter’ given that they like ‘The Mothers of Invention’.
