[Solution Library] The police department of a large city decided to evaluate its human relations course for new officers. A two-factor factorial experiment

Question: The police department of a large city decided to evaluate its human relations course for new officers.

A two-factor factorial experiment was designed, where the treatments were the type of beat to which

officers were assigned and the length of the human relations course. A sample of 45 new officers were

chosen; each of the nine treatment combinations had five officers assigned.

A test was developed to measure officers' attitude toward minority groups. This test was administered

to the participating officers after their training and they had experienced two weeks on their beat.

Higher scores indicate better attitudes towards minority groups.

Analysis of the data revealed a significant interaction effect between the type of beat and length of

human relations course. The table below shows the mean test scores for the treatment combinations.

Type of Beat

Length of Course Upper Class Middle Class Inner City

5 hours 34.4 30.2 20.1

10 hours 35.5 32.4 39.4

15 hours 39.2 34.7 54.3

  1. Create a profile plot to help the police department visualize the interaction.
  2. Write a few sentences explaining the interaction to the police department.
