Question: You are a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. You are responsible for measuring many weather variables each day at your remote location on the Wisconsin shore of Lake Superior. During the month of July, you have recorded the temperature highs and lows for each day. You want to determine how consistent and predictable temperatures are for the month of July.
Below are the recorded temperature highs and lows for the month of July. Use what you know have learned about central tendency and dispersion to evaluate these data, using the appropriate statistical tools available in Excel and PHStats.
Provide answers in an Excel file
- Evaluate the high temperatures and the low temperature separately.
- Describe each distribution using both statistical terms and plain English.
- Interpret the results of your distribution analysis and explain how the well the samples might be used to predict the high temperatures and the low temperatures for any given day in July.
- Why will your ability to estimate high temperatures differ from your ability to estimate low temperatures?
- Use an appropriate graph to compare the highs with the lows. Explain why your graph is appropriate and what it shows.
- Explain what you would expect to find if you were to conduct an evaluation of daily temperature ranges for the month.
