Question: You may NOT receive help from the tutor lab (or otherwise have someone who knows statistics give significant assistance). You MAY work with one or two other people from class; if you do so, please write all names on the same project to hand in.

General information:

Analysis of Variance, or ANOVA, is a widely used statistical test. It is an extension of the 2-sample independent t-test. The 2-sample t-test can only be used to compare between two groups (say: males and females), but ANOVA can be used to test for difference of means between 2, 3, or more groups simultaneously. So for instance, you could compare the average GPA between Freshmen/Sophomores, Juniors/Seniors, and Grad students. Or you could test for differences in starting salaries between people with Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees. Etc!

The situation:

You work for NASA and must research what sort of batteries should be used on the next large-scale mission. There are three Candidates to choose from: Lithium batteries, Solid-state batteries, and Atomic batteries. You VI a sample of each batteries under extreme conditions in order to determine how long it would last on a mission, and obtain the following results. Use a = 0.05.

Directions:

Find out how to perform a analysis of variance (ANOVA, 1-way ANOVA, 1-factor ANOVA) and run it with the given data. In particular I want to see:

- Brief explanation of the hypothesis in ANOVA

- Write out the hypotheses

- Descriptive statistics and comparison boxplots

- The F test statistic and the p-value

- A short Conclusion

- Bonus: Run follow-up tests to determine the specific difference(s) between battery types
