Question: How many calories you will burn or expend with 60 minutes of walking on the treadmill? An article that appeared in the American Journal of Men’s Health (2010) presented the results of a study conducted by researchers Harris and George, whose objective was to test whether overweight men spend more energy than normal-weight men if they walked on the treadmill for same time, Energy expenditure (EE) was measured in kilocalories (kcal).

Eighty normal-weight and eighty overweight male participants, ages 21–45 years, were recruited from a large, urban university in South Florida. Before walking, normal-weight and overweight men were matched in pair based on their height and age. During one session, each participant was made to walk for 60 minutes on a treadmill, and their actual EE was calculated. A summary of the results is shown in the following table. The data is not strongly skewed .

Sample size Sample average (kcal) Sample SD (kcal)
