Question: An investigator studying the relationship between diet and heart disease records the cholesterol levels of ten males who completed an annual physical. The cholesterol measure (variable X) was scaled so that higher values reflect greater serum cholesterol levels. Heart disease (variable Y) is measured as narrowing of the arteries. It is scaled so that higher (Y) values indicate more narrowing - also representing a greater risk for heart disease. Test to see if cholesterol levels are related to arterial narrowing. Set alpha (α) = .01, 2-tail test.
| Patient | X - Cholesterol | Y Arterial narrowing |
| A | 290 | 4.0 |
| B | 240 | 3.0 |
| C | 230 | 3.5 |
| D | 180 | 3.2 |
| E | 160 | 2.0 |
| F | 140 | 2.3 |
| G | 120 | 2.2 |
| H | 110 | 2.1 |
| I | 100 | 1.0 |
| J | 90 | 0 |
