Question: As every airline passenger knows, there are never enough armrests! Some passengers are bothered by having to share armrests, and there is even a hint of a battle of the sexes! In a recent investigation, passengers were surveyed about how they felt having to share the armrest with another. Over the course of 20 flights occurring over a variety of weekdays, nights, and weekends, the flight crew selected a random sample of passengers that had been seated next to individuals of opposite gender. The investigators were interested in the level of agitation felt when the "seat-mate" used the common armrest. The table below summarizes data gathered from interviewing the passengers. Females responding had been seated next to males, and males responding had been seated next to females. (Only one person was randomly selected to be interviewed from a seat-mate pair.) The investigators are interested in whether males and females are equally bothered by their opposite gender's use of the common armrest.

State of Bother vs. Gender
