[Solution] In Assignment 2 you will need to look at the relationships between variables (bivariate statistics). One of the relationships you want to examine

Question: In Assignment 2 you will need to look at the relationships between variables (bivariate statistics).

One of the relationships you want to examine is between the variable "age of parent" and "reunification of the child." "Age of parent" is measured in two categories:

21 or below and above age 21. "Reunification of the child" is measured yes/no. The sample size is 120. Seventy parents are 21 years of age or below and 50 parents are above age 21. Sixty-five of the families regained custody of the child (family reunification) and 55 did not.

  1. Fill in the cells of a hypothetical table where the results suggest that older parents have a much greater chance of regaining custody of their child (include variable labels, value labels, and frequencies only, at this point).
  2. Decide which of the two variables should be treated as the independent variable and which as the dependent variable. Insert the appropriate percentages in the table (above) that allow you to answer the question: Does there seem to be evidence of a causal relationship between these two variables? (Realize that to answer this question more conclusively we would need to control for additional variables.) Don't include both column and row percentages. Include one or the other, depending on which variable you think is the independent variable.
  3. Suppose you do not find evidence of a statistically significant relationship between these two variables. Describe what you would see (the overall pattern) when you compare the percentages for categories of the variable you are treating as the independent variable. Be very specific.
  4. Do you need to take into account the degrees of freedom when determining whether the result is statistically significant? If you think the answer is yes, what’s the reason you would need to take this information into account? If you think the answer is no, explain why not.
  5. Suppose the chi-square for this table is 2.80, p=.75. How would you interpret the result?
