Use the 2004 GSS data for this assignment. This is the same dataset used for SPSS Assignment #1. It is available on the course website in the "SPSS Labs → SPSS Lab 1" folder and is called GSS_SPSS1.
You want to determine whether the economic conditions in which a person grows up influence the number of children the person has as an adult. The variable childs represents the number of children for each respondent, a quantitative variable. The variable incom16 represents the childhood economic background of each respondent, coded as an ordinal variable.
As a first step, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests whether the average number of children differs among adults of different childhood economic backgrounds.
For questions 1 through 6 provide only the answers that are requested. Please put clearly labeled SPSS syntax and output in an appendix.
- Include in your analysis only adults of age 25 or older.
- Create a line or bar graph representing the average number of children by each level of adult’s childhood economic condition. For each group, label the mean number of children.
- For each group, provide the mean number of children (again), the standard deviation, standard error, and the 95% confidence interval for the mean. Why is the least precise confidence interval for the "far above average" group? How could you make the confidence interval more precise for this group?
- The GSS provides random, independent samples for each group. Are the other two assumptions for an ANOVA met? Explain your answer. Note: If you refer to SPSS output in this answer, put the output in the appendix.
- In a brief paragraph, explain your conclusion from the ANOVA using a .05 level of significance. Note: Put the ANOVA table in the appendix.
- If appropriate, conduct multiple comparisons (post hoc tests) for pairs of groups using the Bonferroni method. Do not provide the entire table from SPSS because it might be large. In a brief paragraph, simply discuss a few of the comparisons.
- Put clearly labeled SPSS syntax and output here (appendix).
