Study Guide

You are testing to see if winning percentage is related to an athlete’s ability to deal with pressure, focus, and their overall enjoyment of their sport. You are also interested in determining if there is a difference between these variables and the level of the athlete, high school, college, or pro. You conducted a study by calculating 60 different athletes’ (20 high school, 20 college, 20 pro) overall winning percentage and had each athlete complete a 3 question survey. The survey used a Likert scale from 1 (Least) to 5 (most). You would like to answer multiple questions about this population. Using the data
set provided, conduct the following three statistical procedures:

ANOVA with post hoc
Simple Linear Regression/Correlation
Chi Square

Use your book and the provided articles to assist you with answering the following questions.

Chapter 12 (ANOVA)
Chapter 10 (Regression)
Chapter 8 and 11 (Chi Square)

Provide tables for each of the analyses and at least one graph for each. Tables should include both mean and SD with the appropriate significance values identified and any additional information specific to that statistical method (R and SE values for regression/correlation, etc.)

At minimal, you should determine the following:

ANOVA

  1. Are any of the 4 variables (winning %, pressure, focus, enjoyment) significantly different between high school, college, and pro athletes?
  2. If so, which variables and for which level of athlete (post hoc)?

    Regression/Correlation
    1. Is there a relationship between winning percentage and pressure, focus, or enjoyment?
    2. What has the strongest relationship with winning percentage and is it different between the levels of the athletes?

    Chi Square
    1. Does the level of the athlete influence the athlete’s ability to deal with pressure, focus, and their overall enjoyment of their sport?

You must complete the following general questions. Once you have submitted your final project you need to post your answers for the questions below into the Discussion board for Unit 5. Be prepared to discuss your answers.

    1. What was the main finding of this research study?

    2. Were all 3 statistics needed to answer the study question?

    3. What is the benefit of using three different statistics?

    4. Design a follow-up study to help support the current findings. Include specific statistics that you would run.

    5. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of the four basic sampling techniques. Identify the four basic sampling methods. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? What is a population and how does it differ from a sample? Identify at least two other sampling methods and describe when they would be used, their weaknesses, and their strengths.

    6. What are the properties of a sample normal distribution? What are the types of skewness and what happens to the normal distribution in each? What are the causes of skewness? What are the resulting changes of the measures of sample statistics? What are the resulting changes of the measures of population parameters?

    7. Compare and contrast parametric statistical tests and nonparametric statistical tests.
