- A study was conducted to see if carnitine supplementation has an effect on the length of treadmill time. A group of 48, C57/6J mice were allocated to two groups. One group received a placebo, while the other one was given 75mg of carnitine for 6 weeks. At the end of the 6 wks, mice were exercised on a treadmill for 20 minutes to determine the length of survival time on the treadmill . (20 pts)
Status= S=survival time; T=terminated the experiment at 20 minutes.

- Are there any censored values in the above data? If yes, how many? How did you determine the censored values? (5)
- Produce a graph that depicts the survival time of the placebo and carnitine supplemented animals on the treadmill? (5pts)
- What was the mean, median and 95% CI of the survival time on the treadmill for the placebo group and the carnitine supplemented group? (5pts)
-
Is there a significant difference in the length of time that the mice stayed on the treadmill based on their carnitine status? (5pts)
II) A study was conducted to determine if alcohol consumption is related to folate status. A group of 120 people were recruited after informed consent and blood was drawn to determine RBC folate levels. Alcohol consumption during the previous six months was also obtained in an interview. Assume that the authors of this study published their results in the following table: (15pts)Alcohol consumption RBC folate levels (mg/dl) ≤20 >20≤40mg/dl >40 ≤80 > 80 ≤ 6 drinks/wk 8 13 25 8 > 6 drinks/wk 20 23 17 6 - Carry out the appropriate hypothesis test to determine if RBC folate levels are associated to alcohol consumption. Include the appropriate output from SPSS. (10 pts)
- Determine the strength of association between folate levels and alcohol consumption? Discuss this strength as it relates to statistical significance? (5pts)
III) Eleven diabetic patients had fasting plasma glucose levels measured before and , four weeks after ingesting an extract of bitter squash (a vegetable). The results are as follows: (20pts)

| 10 | 126 | 98 |
| 11 | 208 | 167 |
a) What is the mean, SEM and 95% CI of the change in the blood glucose levels after the ingestion of the extract? (5pts)
b) Which hypothesis test would you choose to determine if the change in the blood glucose levels is statistically significant? Why? (Show SPSS out put)(10pts)
c) Carry out the hypothesis test and discuss the results in terms of both biological and statistical significance? (5pts)
IV) The following regression analysis was obtained from http://www.nervenet.org/papers_images/BrainRevFig03.gif obtained on 4/26/07 .
Answer the following questions? (6pts)
a) What is the correlation coefficient?
b) What percent of the variation in brain weight is explained by body weight?
c) Write out the regression equation for the above model. (Use real numbers if you can get them from the chart; other wise write the terms)
