Statistics Project

Here is what you will do:

Step 1: Find an interesting data set. It must have variables that lend themselves to analysis by some form of multiple regression, and it must have at least 15 cases per predictor. The data you find may have variables that are not relevant to the question(s) you want to explore; these should be removed from your data set.

Step 2: Formulate a question or, more likely, a set of questions that you propose to answer by analyzing the data you have found. (This may have been done already by whoever collected the data.)

NOTE: Steps 1 & 2 are hard to separate from one another. It is best to start with some general question(s) that guide your search for data, and once you have a suitable data set you will probably want to make your questions more specific to those data.

Step 3: If it is not already an SPSS file, you must turn it into one. All variables must be clearly labeled, and any categorical variables must have value labels.

Step 4: Write a concise description of the data set. Where did you find it? What does the sample consist of? What was measured, and how? And so on. Keith's descriptions of the data sets he uses are good examples to follow. If there is not complete information available, (a) do the best you can and (b) explain what you are unable to find out about the data.

Step 5: Analyze the data in whatever way is appropriate to answer your question(s). Write up your analysis in whatever way makes the most sense to you, but you must (a) describe what you did and (b) why you did it and (c) what you found. Include relevant SPSS output.

Here is what you will hand in:

  1. Your question(s) about the data, from Step 2.
  2. The data set, as a sav file, from Step 3
  3. Your description of the data set from Step 4.
  4. Your analysis from Step 5.

Here is what I will be looking for:

  1. A well-chosen, completely labeled data set.
  2. A clear and concise (and complete as possible) description of the data.
  3. Meaningful and relevant questions about the data.
  4. Appropriate and thorough analysis.
  5. Clear explanation of the rationale behind your analysis and of your findings.
