Proportion of Teens Who Smoke

Introduction

This study involves a survey that obtained the number of young people who currently smoke at least one cigarette per day over the last 30 days. This will include children aged 11-18 but will not include those who use smokeless tobacco products or cigars. I have chosen to use the figures that are supplied by the National Cancer Institute and the statistics can be found in the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance report for 2009, published in 2010. The information for the comparison values can be found at http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/tobacco/statisticssnapshot

Hypothesis

It is my belief that the number of teens listed in this report is higher than the figures that have been given. I think that even though the test is anonymous, many teens may still lie about the fact that they smoke cigarettes. I want to test whether the true proportion of teens who have smoked at least one cigarette per day over the last 30 days is greater than 0.195.

Formally,

\[\begin{aligned} & {{H}_{0}}:p=0.195 \\ & {{H}_{A}}:p>0.195 \\ \end{aligned}\]

This study will be a upper tailed test because it is my belief that the number of young people who are smoking is greater than the study originally found.
