Statistics Assignment

Use this R dataset for Exercise 4 : RespParent.Rdata

This is a simulated dataset and it is similar but not the same as the data in the paper.

Data Description

ID Identifier
Sex1 Boy or Girl in Treatment Gp Sex2 Boy or Girl in Control Gp
BirthWgt1 Birth Weight (kgs) in Treatment Gp BirthWgt2 Birth Weight (kgs) in Control Gp
BMI1 BMI at age 3 years in Treatment Gp BMI2 BMI at age 3 years in Control Gp
zBMI1 z-score of BMI1 zBMI2 z-score of BMI2
Z1grouped zBMI1 grouped into ranges z2grouped zBMI2 grouped into ranges

DifferenceZ1Z2 is equal to zBMI1 – zBMI2

Exercises

Exercise 1

  1. In our own words write a brief summary of the study design, participants, interventions and the primary outcome but not the results. You must write for a general educated audience without jargon. Your summary should be less than 200 words. [3 marks]
  2. In the study design what decisions were made regarding twin births, and breast or bottle feeding? [1 mark]

Exercise 2

Use data from Table 1 in the paper to answer the following.

  1. Construct a two-way table showing the numbers of boys and girls in each group including marginal totals. Use an appropriate statistical test or method to see if the randomisation produced similar or significantly different proportions of boys in both groups. [2 marks]
  2. Use an appropriate statistical test or method to determine if the randomisation produced two groups with similar or significantly different birth weights. [2 marks]

Exercise 3

Use Figure 2 and its information for this exercise.

  1. How many children in the responsive parenting group had a BMI below the mean value at age 3? [1 mark]
  2. A 95% Confidence Interval is shown in Figure 2. Using the numbers mentioned recalculate the 95% CI for the absolute difference of the mean BMI z scores. Show your working. Your answer may be different from the paper’s CI.

[2 marks]

Exercise 4

Use the dataset RespParent.Rdata with R software and methods from PUBH2007 to answer the following. Your answer should include brief descriptions of the R Commander method, for example, listing the menus selected.

  1. Re-produce Table 1 with just two rows for Boys and Birth weight. Include the correct headings and row information. [2 marks]
  2. Re-produce the Figure 2 graph / chart. You can have two separate graphs or charts. [1 mark]
  3. Carry out a hypothesis test to test if the absolute difference of the mean BMI z scores is 0. Show working including the hypotheses statements, test-statistic, P-value and comment. [3 marks]

Exercise 5

Discuss briefly the paper’s findings and their importance. Refer to the strength of the results and their clinical significance. [3 marks]
