Are we smarter than our parents?
The objective of this article is to analyze the findings obtained by Dr. James Flynn about the patterns of scores obtained by people in the IQ tests. Historically, many tests have been modified and updated in time, in such a way that currently the results are essentially "standardized", in the sense that the test scores are constructed so that the population mean is \(\mu =100\) and the population standard deviation of test scores is \(\sigma =16\). Dr. Flynn analyzed the non-standardized raw scores of IQ tests in time, and he observed a sustained increase in time in the raw scores, which has opened a controversy of the real meaning of the score of the IQ tests. This increase in raw IQ scores is especially strong in abstract reason abilities.
The main consequence of Dr. Lynn’s findings is that they lead us to re-think about the IQ test and their validity as an intelligence measure. In fact, if Dr. Lynn’s findings are accurate, it leads to the following implications: If the IQ tests in fact measure intelligence, then intelligence could be molded by certain environmental factors, and on the other hand, if intelligence is in fact hereditary, then the IQ tests are not really measuring intelligence.
