Independent Samples T Test: The independent variable is ‘language’ with two levels (neutral or foul). The dependent variable is credibility. The hypothesis is that suspects who swear will appear more credible than suspects who do not swear (i.e., a one tailed test).
-Data-
Neutral: 4, 5, 5, 3, 6, 7, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, 7, 4, 3, 4, 2, 7, 5, 5, 6
Foul: 6, 7, 4, 7, 7, 6, 5, 4, 5, 7, 6, 6, 6, 5, 6, 6, 4, 1, 3, 3, 7, 5
Also: After the analysis is ran, you will get output on the screen with a title of the type of analysis you ran. To put my name on the output click twice very quickly right on top of the words of the title. Then you will see a box appear around the title, and little black boxes appear at the corners of the box. Now click after the name of the test and type in "Heather Merchant", then click once on the page anywhere outside the box to be sure the box disappears.
Written Part of Research Report
Start with describing the purpose of the study, the independent (‘language’ with 2 levels: ‘neutral’ or ‘foul’) and dependent (‘credibility’) variables, hypotheses that was formulated (‘suspects who swear will appear more credible than suspects who do not swear’), a brief description of the methodology including the total number of researchers (10 researchers last class and 14 researchers this class for a total of 24 researchers), how much data was collected by each researcher (2 people were interviewed by each researcher), total number of subjects tested for all researchers (20 people interviewed last class and 28 people interviewed this class totaling 48 people interviewed), the materials used (two pieces of paper that were presented to the participants with the foul and neutral content and the credibility scale), some details on how the study was conducted (selected two people who were 18 or older and flipped a coin to see who read the neutral or foul content then asked them to rate it on a scale provided on the paper hand out of the level of creditability of the person making a statement), the basic results and conclusion.
*The results should be precisely stated. Use the following example the research reports: "Alpha was set at the .05 level. A one-tailed random t test was conducted on the credibility data. The t test revealed that credibility for the foul condition (M= 6.5) was significantly greater than for the neutral condition (M=4.5), t(24)= 3.59, p = .021."
