FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT

GENERAL RESEARCH QUESTION

"What causes Canadian students to support alcohol policies?"

"What can explain that some Canadian students support alcohol policies and others do not?"

"What can explain differences in Canadian students' level of support for alcohol policies?"

  1. Propose an explanation
In one or two paragraphs, write a good explanation that describes how support for alcohol policies could vary between students. What could explain variations between Canadian students regarding support for alcohol policies?
  2. Data and hypothesis
  1. Hypothesis
  2. Variables: Which variables will you use for your research? List and describe those variables. If your research hypothesis requires that some variables be transformed. Describe those transformations.

3. Analyses

  1. Descriptive statistics:
Describe both the independent and the dependent variables. Often you can add depth and interest to your analyses by briefly presenting the frequency distributions or bar chart of the variables. Present the central tendency and dispersion measures.
  2. Bivariate comparisons (controlled comparisons) (3-4 pages): This is the section where you test your hypothesis, where you perform comparisons. Describe the analyses you will perform. Construct readable tables. You can select, copy and paste the tables generated by SPSS directly into a word processor, but they almost always require further editing for readability. Present the results and use statistical tools to enhance your presentation.

4. Conclusions and implications

Discuss the results on 3 levels. First, you provide a condensed recapitulation. What is the main finding? Is the hypothesis confirmed? Second, you discuss whether the findings are consistent with the explanation you developed. Third, research papers often include obligatory suggestions for further research. Indeed, you might have encountered some methodological problems. Describe these new issues or questions. Here, too, you are allowed some room to speculate - to venture beyond the edge of the data and engage in a little "What if?" thinking.
