Final Exam
You are working for Texas Commissioner of Education Robert Scott. Mr. Scott has provided you with a data set of a sample of individual high schools throughout the state of Texas (FINALEXAM Schools.sav). Mr. Scott would like you to write up the findings for the first three questions in a memo format. The answer to the fourth question should be turned submitted in the form of a completed table.
-
Mr. Scott would like to know if there are differences between the schools in different
Regions of the state
(Region) on the following three variables
- Percent graduating in 2009 (grad09)
- Average ACT score in 2009 (act09)
- Change in the percent of students who met or exceeded math standards between 2008 and 2009 (mathch)
-
Mr. Scott wants you to look at two dependent variables
- Percent of students who meet or exceed state standards in math (mathme)
- Percent of students who meet or exceed state standards in reading (readme)
For each of these he wants you to determine the combined impact of:
- Percent low income (loinc)
- Percent limited English proficiency (lep)
- Percent graduating 2009 (grad09)
In writing up your findings make sure you include the overall impact of the three independent variables as well as which, if any, are significant predictors of the dependent variables and if a variable is a significant predictor, the nature of the relationship.
-
Mr. Scott wants you to look the dependent variable
Change in the percent of students who meet or exceed the state science standards between 2008 and 2008
(scich) and see which of the following variables are related to it in a multiple regression equation (use a stepwise method).
- Change in the percent of students who meet or exceed the state math standards between 2008 and 2008 (mathch)
- Change in the percent of students who meet or exceed the state reading standards between 2008 and 2008 (readch)
-
A set of dummy coded variables representing the different regions of the state. Use the Northeast region as your referent group
In writing up your findings make sure you include the overall impact of the final model as well as a substantive interpretation of the b values for the variables in the final model. With your output you should include the set of commands you used in creating the dummy coded variables.
- Finally Mr. Scott would like you to make up a table that tells him which statistical tests to use under different conditions. Fill in the following table telling Mr. Scott which statistical tests you would recommend in each case. Make sure you include test of statistical significance as well as strength of association. Some cells may have multiple tests in them, some may have none.
| Dependent Variable | |||||
| 2 category nominal | 3 or more category nominal | ordinal | interval | ||
