The data file you will need for these assessment tasks is titled "upliftsassess.sav" and can be found on OASIS and in the modules folder in the dock on the computers in B229. It contains the responses of 160 police officers to a large questionnaire study investigating the topic of stress in the police force. This file contains responses to only part of the questionnaire and comprises 6 variables as follows:
Children Whether the participant has children or not (1=yes, 2=no)
Sex The sex of the participant (1=male, 2=female)
Servegrp How long the participant has been in the police force (1=up to 10 years, 2= 10-20 years, 3= more than 20 years)
Age The participants ages in years
Operupm The participants mean scores on a 7 item, 5 pt (0-4) likert scales measuring operational uplifts. Participants responded whether the item made them feel good during the past month (0=definitely does not apply to me, 4=strongly applies to me). These are items like "public showing interest in my work", "charging someone", "helping the public" and "going on a raid".
Orgupm Measured in a similar manner to operational uplifts this is the mean score of 10 items measuring organisational uplifts. These are items like "equipment being available" "tidy work area" "helpful supervision" and "clarity of operational guidelines".
Conduct the following tasks using SPSS.
- Present descriptive statistics for both organisational and operational uplifts including a graphical representation of the data. Comment on the distributions.
- Present descriptive statistics for both organisational and operational uplifts split up by sex and comment on the results.
- Assess if there are any significant differences between men and women on both organisational and operational uplifts. Comment on the results.
- Calculate the correlation coefficients between organisational uplifts, operational uplifts and age. Assess if they are significant and comment on the results.
- Produce scatterplots of the above correlations. Comment on them.
- Recode age by conducting a median split (divide into two groups) and assess if there is any difference between older and younger participants on operational and organisational uplifts. Comment on the results.
- Conduct oneway ANOVAs on operational and organisational uplifts to asses if these differ according to length of service. Conduct an appropriate post hoc test if indicated and comment on the findings.
- Conduct factorial ANOVAs on operational and organisational uplifts with length of service and whether participants have children or not as independent variables. Conduct appropriate post hoc tests if indicated and comment on the findings.
