Case Study One

Aggressive Speeders in Ohio

As our world continues to speed up, every part of our lives seem to be speeding up to keep pace. Driving is no exception. In the last few years, states across the country have seen a huge increase in speeders, especially aggressive speeders. Aggressive speeders are defined, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, as speeders who exceed the speed limit by more than 20 miles per hour.

In 2008 alone, officers for the Ohio State Highway Patrol issued 74,507 citations to aggressive speeders. For Ohio’s 88 counties, Hamilton County topped the list with 4,797 total citations while Morgan County issued just 30 citations to such drivers.

Your Assignment – data analysis

You have just studied this week about the topics of mean, median, mode, quartiles and standard deviation. Now, we are going to use these mathematical concepts to analyze the data provided by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Using the file provided on the course website or at http://statepatrol.ohio.gov/doc/AggDrivingTrafficBulletin.pdf , here is what you are to do with the data for the 88 Ohio Counties (not the district information):

  1. Compute the 5-number summary using the data from all 88 counties.
  2. Construct a box-and-whisker plot, using either a computer program such as Publisher or MSPaint or by hand with similar neatness and accuracy.
  3. Calculate the mean and standard deviation for the data.
  4. Calculate the standard score for each county.
  5. Use the information from Part 4 in conjunction with the Empirical Rule to graph the distribution on the normal curve (a blank Normal Curve can be found on the course website).
  6. Using your calculations from Part 4, determine if the data "roughly" follows the Empirical Rule.

(NOTE: The table on the map stating the Total Citations of 74,507 is not the total you will get when addition together the counties individually. Your total will be slightly less than that as some citations were apparently not reported on the map.)

Your Assignment – reporting your findings

In addition to submitting all work and calculations (whether done by hand or on Excel), you are to submit an 8-paragraph summary of the assignment and your findings. The summary should be formatted with one paragraph each for the introduction and conclusion and one paragraph for each of the six steps listed above. Each paragraph should include some interpretation, analysis or reaction and not simply be a reporting of how you calculated the values you obtained.
