Action Items

  1. View the attached document that discusses the requirements for a statistical paper.
  2. Gather data:
    1. Use the sample data found on pages 770-771 of your textbook. That data is also linked here for your convenience. ( Male Health Exam Results , Female Health Exam Results ) This data set uses 13 variables.
    2. Check the course Bulletin Board "Assignment of Variable" to see if your instructor has assigned one of the thirteen variables to you. If not, email your instructor to assign one of the 13 variables to you. You will need to use both the male and female data for this one variable. MY ASSIGNMENT OF VARIABLE IS WT
    3. The raw data will go in Appendix A of your paper. Include the data for your variable ONLY.
  3. Analyze that data set:
    For this part , if you are male use the male variable; if you are female use the female variable.
    1. Determine the center of the data using the mean, mode, and median.
    2. Determine measures of variation (range, standard deviation and variance).
    3. Determine the quartiles.
    4. Determine the IQR (Inner Quartile Range) and any outliers in the data.
    5. Create the modified boxplot of the data showing any outliers. (You may need to draw this using MS Word tools.). Make sure that your boxplot has a proper scale.
    6. Using Excel, group the data into 6 to 10 groups and create a histogram for the data. (Excel uses bins to group the data. See the attached worksheet for instructions on creating the histogram.)
    7. Based on the information in the steps above determine if this sample came from a normal population distribution.
  4. Draw inferences from the data. (For the last part of this section you will need to use both male and female data for your variable.)
    1. Use the sample data to construct a 98% confidence interval for the mean of all males or females.
    2. Use the sample data to construct a 90% confidence interval for the mean of all males.
    3. Use the sample data to construct a 90% confidence interval for the mean of all females.
    4. On a number line display the two 90% confidence intervals (male and female). Using the two 90% confidence intervals decide if the mean of all males is equal to the mean of all females? Give your opinion but substantiate this opinion with an explanation of what you see in your display.
  5. Write a formal paper incorporating and explaining the results in steps three and four above. The paper must follow the guidelines and contain the following information.
    1. Include an introduction, body, and conclusions.
    2. Describe how you would collect the sample data you are using. Be sure to use the sampling methods you have learned in your discussion as well as the random process in Excel.
    3. Include an explanation of any problems that might occur when collecting this data. (E.g., if the data was "finger length" you might discuss which finger is chosen, whether to include the nail and knuckle, rounding errors, etc.) as well as a "quick" discussion as to why the data might be useful. (E.g., the variable wrist width might be used if you were designing jewelry.)
    4. Describe and give the measures of the center and explain which measure best fits this data set.
    5. Describe and give the measures of variation.
    6. Include the boxplot, showing outliers, with an explanation of how outliers are determined. Give the quartiles and IQR in this explanation.
    7. Discuss the standard deviation of the data set.
      • Calculate the ACTUAL percent of your data set that is within one, two, and three standard deviations of the sample mean.
      • Compare these results to Chebyshev's rule.
      • Compare these results to the empirical rule.
      • Explain any conflict with your data and both of these two rules.
    8. Include the histogram of the data and a description of the shape of the distribution.
    9. Include the boxplot along with an explanation of what it tells you about the distribution of your data.
    10. Include the three confidence intervals.
      • Explain the purpose of a confidence interval.
      • Include the requirements check.
      • Explain which interval is larger and why.
      • Interpret the results of the intervals .
