Assignment #5: ANOVA, Recoding, and
Chi Square
- ANOVA : Using the College Alcohol Survey, develop null and alternative hypotheses for the following research question: Does year in school (a3) affect the number of drinks in the last 30 days (c10)? In your write-up, please include the mean number of drinks for each of the groups on the independent variable and a brief statement about them; the F-ratio, degrees of freedom, and the significance level of the ANOVA. What are your technical and substantive interpretations of the results?
-
t-test: Perform a recode of the year in school variable to make a dichotomous variable where freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors are in one category, and where fifth year undergrads and graduate students are in another category. Again use the number of drinks variable as your dependent variable. Perform an independent samples t-test and report the means, t-statistic, degrees of freedom and the significance level. No need to develop hypotheses and interpretations for these results.
3.
Chi Square
: Using the College Alcohol Survey, develop null and alternative hypotheses for the following research question: Does race (race) affect Greek membership (a11)? In your write-up, report the percentages of Greek membership by race based on the crosstab and a brief statement about them; the Pearson Chi Square statistic, degrees of freedom, and the significance level of the test. What are your
technical
and
substantive
interpretations of the results?
4.
Chi Square
: Using the State Court Processing Statistics database, develop your own research question and null and alternative hypotheses for the variables you’ve chosen. Only use
nominal level
data for both your independent and dependent variables. In your write-up, report the percentages in the crosstab and a brief statement about them; the Pearson Chi Square statistic, degrees of freedom, and the significance level of the test. What are your
technical
and
substantive
interpretations of the results?
