The firewater myth (FM) is the notion that Native Americans are more susceptible to the effects of alcohol and more vulnerable to alcohol problems due to biological or genetic differences. Although genetics clearly play a role in the risk for an alcohol use disorder, there is little evidence to support the notion that biological differences or genetics play a greater role in alcohol use disorders among Native Americans compared to other racial groups. However, the idea that alcohol-related health disparities affecting Native Americans are driven by biological variables remains pervasive in the general public and among AI/AN peoples. This is problematic for a number of reasons. Not only is this notion unsupported by evidence, but believing that one’s ethnic/racial group has a particular biological vulnerability to alcohol use disorders could have negative effects on alcohol expectancies and drinking behavior among Native Americans. You hypothesize that belief in the firewater myth increases alcohol use consequences among Native American college students who drink.

Using the dataset labeled Data for homework 4.sav to conduct a (simultaneous) multiple regression analysis examining the effects of the firewater myth on alcohol use consequences (as measured by the YAACQ in the dataset) among Native American college students who drink. There are a number of variables that have been found in previous research to affect alcohol use consequences that should be included in your regression model as covariates, these variables are participants' age, gender, and frequency of binge drinking per month.
