What should you eat to improve your math skills?
There are no products that will instantly help the brain think better, but there is a fairly simple principle for good brain function. Namely, you need to eat right on an ongoing basis. If a student prepares for math classes on time, they will not have to study through the night on the eve of the exam, memorizing complex formulas, and if they always have the habit of proper nutrition, their body will not have to seek strength for doing math assignments. What can you eat to affect math skills?
This requires three components:
- Fats. We are not talking about fatty food - a sandwich with salami is not a good idea. However, constantly consuming fatty fish and high-quality vegetable oil is a good way to nourish the brain.
- Vitamins. B vitamins and magnesium are very important for the brain and nervous system. Their deficiency will be noticeable by the disruption of mental activity. If a person complains that they can't concentrate while doing math, then this indicates a vitamin deficiency. It's worth adding that vitamins as food supplements (that is, tablets, solutions, and so on) can only be prescribed by a specialist based on test results. However, you can consume foods rich in a certain group of vitamins without a doctor's prescription. For example, B vitamins are found in meat, buckwheat, pumpkin, and beans.
- Glucose. We are not talking about sweets but foods rich in slow carbohydrates, such as cereals, whole-grain pasta, bread, and vegetables.
However, the products themselves are not everything. Much depends on how meals are organized. Here, you can be guided by the famous formula: "Eat breakfast yourself, share lunch with a friend, and give dinner to your enemy."
Here are the recommendations that you should stick to:
- Breakfast. It should be satisfying for students. The main thing is that you absolutely cannot miss it!
- Lunch. Whatever you choose for lunch, there should also be protein - for example, fish, meat, chicken, dairy products. As a side dish, you should eat buckwheat, whole grain pasta - something that contains "long-term" carbohydrates. It's better to think about lunch the day before. You should prepare something in advance and take it with you. This will help you avoid the temptation to "buy off" your hunger with fast food.
- Dinner. The main thing about dinner is not to overdo it and also not to eat right before going to bed. Vegetables and foods that contain light protein are perfect for this meal. For example, fish or poultry are easily digestible, as are minced meat dishes—cutlets or meatballs.
What should you pack for healthy snacks? Choose nuts, whole grain or protein cookies, bread, and fruits—for example, bananas or apples.

- Base: for the base, use whole grain bread or tortilla if you want to wrap your food.
- Sauce: mix sour cream and a crushed garlic clove; add finely chopped herbs to taste, salt and pepper.
- Fillings: boiled chicken or meat/fried fish—foods high in protein or healthy fat; vegetables—for example, cabbage, green salad, tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers.
Remember: such a sandwich will support brain activity and energy throughout the body but cannot replace a full breakfast and lunch!
