Breaking The Math Stigma and Making it Fun in 2025!

Math was the subject most people dreaded. And if you didn't dread it, people would look at you and say, "Why do you like math?!" or "How are you so good at math?!"—you weren't the cool kid if you were into math.

More than that, the issue most people have is they didn't like it because they struggled with it and didn't find any entertainment value. 31% of adults struggle with basic math problems, and 25% of children have math anxiety.

It's a shame—there are so many ways to break the stigma and make math fun again, and we're here to tell you how.

Read on to find out more.

The Stigma of Math: Why Do People Find It Tricky?

Mathematics is one of the most dreaded subjects—we think we've made that clear in the introduction. And we're not bad-mouthing math; it's facts.

It's a stereotype that can take root in early childhood. For most of us, it is never about mathematics. It is about the fear of the mental block and simply not understanding numbers like letters (algebra is some people's worst nightmare) and words. For kids, it's really daunting.

The result is the math anxiety statistic we gave you in the introduction. School kids become anxious about performing and feel scared to put an answer in case they're wrong. Eventually, that anxiety leads to avoidance and frustration.

Society contributes to this stereotype as well; how many times do we come across someone stating, "I'm bad at math but I'll never need it"? These attitudes play into the false narrative passed onto the kids in the classroom.

Making Math Fun with Gaming

Most learning methods are mostly mechanical and repetitive, with little scope for free thinking or lateral thinking - they're so outdated.

We prefer the new methods creeping in that are helping kids love math again. Learning through gaming is one of these big trends. A math game is the perfect way to help kids learn without feeling like they're learning.

This form of adaptive math practice puts students inside fantasy worlds and stories, something they can relate to and actually find entertaining.

This gaming style improves understanding of the subject, for one, but what we love more is that it provides a safe space where kids can take their time to progress through the game rather than feeling under pressure.

Practical Ways to Have a Math-Positive Mindset

To fully eliminate the stereotypes that come with math, the subject needs to be viewed differently to start and help your kids feel the same.

It begins with a growth mindset, where the children believe they will understand and thrive in math with effort and practice. If you can positively support, encourage, and praise them from home, it'll make a massive difference.

You can also try applying math to the real world with your children and using it in everyday situations. Get them to help with some cooking, for example, and measure the ingredients and change the proportions of the ingredients to maintain the ratio. Or if you go to the grocery store, see if you can get them to calculate the change they should have.

Kids are like sponges - they will start to absorb!

Maths is one of the most tricky subjects, we're not surprised so many kids struggle with it. But we know 2025 will be the year to break the stigma and make math fun again!
