Data Analysis and Application

The objective of this paper is to statistically assess the effect of passenger class on survival on a crash. For this purpose, various non-parametric tests will be conducted including a Chi-Square test of independence.

Data File Description

The dataset consist of two variables. The dependent variable (DV) is the variable Saved (1= Saved, 2= Lost), which is measured at the nominal level. The independent variable is Passenger Class (1 = First Class, 2 = Third Class). The total sample size is N = 309.

Testing Assumptions

The main assumption for a Chi-Square of Independence is that all the expected counts are at least 5. Table 1 below shows the expected counts.

It is observed that all expected counts are greater than 5, so then the assumption for the Chi-Square test is met. Hence, the Chi-Square statistic can be meaningfully reported.

Research Questi on, Hypotheses, and Alpha Level

The main purpose of this paper is to statistically assess the effect of passenger class on survival on a crash. The following null and alternative hypotheses need to be tested.
