The purpose of this homework is to practice exercising statistical judgment and demonstrate that you can make regression and correlation analyses. You will find that using Excel to make a regression or correlation analysis is very easy. On the other hand, it takes some thinking to decide how to set up the problem and how to interpret the numbers.
The Farmington City Council wants to know if age is important in determining how much a Farmington citizen uses the city park. Use the data provided below.
On your one-page hand-in, and using good composition, do the following:
- Before making any calculations and before looking at a graph, by just looking at the table of numbers, what, if any, relationship appears to be present between the two variables? The only way to lose points on this point is to not do it, or not do it seriously.
- Before making any calculations, write out what are you going to do (your plan of attack). That is, give a step by step description of how you are going to analyze the data. Include all the steps that are important.
- Make a scatter plot of the data
- Make a regression analysis of the data and put the regression line on your scatter plot of point three. Remove the ANOVA part since that doesn't pertain to the problem. Show the rest of Excel's regression results. Explain the meaning of the "b" coefficient to the Council members in terms of interest to them. Be complete. E.g., among other things say how "good" its value is.
- If you used alpha = 0.01 would the regression analysis show a significant relationship? Show your calculations or reasoning.
- Using a confidence level of 90%, explain to the Farmington City Council what your overall conclusion is and how confident you are of your conclusion. Be as specific and quantitative as you can.
On your one-page report show your graph, regression output, and responses to the above six point. Make sure your printed work is readable to old eyes. You can do it if you use a good layout.
The Farmington City Council recently commissioned a study of part users in their community. Data were collected on the age of each person surveyed and the amount of hours he or she had spent in the park in the past month. The data collected were as follows:
| Time in Park (hr./mo.) | Age |
| 7.2 | 16 |
| 3.5 | 15 |
| 6.6 | 28 |
| 5.4 | 16 |
| 1.5 | 29 |
| 2.3 | 38 |
| 4.4 | 48 |
| 8.8 | 18 |
| 4.9 | 24 |
| 5.1 | 33 |
| 1.0 | 56 |
