Introduction

Diabetes is a disease with growing global implications. A study that analyzed changes in diabetes prevalence since 1980 found that the worldwide prevalence of diabetes has nearly doubled since 1980, with approximately 347 million adults worldwide having diabetes as of 2011 (Danaei et al. 2011). Diabetes is a major public health problem in the United States as well. Using data obtained from the 2005–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the 2007–2009 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 2009 Indian Health Service (HIS) data, and 2010 U.S. resident population estimates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 25.8 million people in the United States (8.3% of the total U.S. population) currently have diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011).
