Assignment 4 Two-Way ANOVA
A study was conducted related to social support and stress. These two factors are believed to be related to physical illness, according to a researcher at the University of Alabama. Two levels of each factor are presented below along with a measure of the number of physical symptoms for each participant.
Social Support
Stress Low Medium High
Low 5 7 5 6 9 5
5 8 8 9 6 9
5 6 5
High 11 13 8 9 3 4
10 16 6 7 2 2
14 7 2
Unless you are specifically asked, report all your answers from the SPSS output. Report in APA format - that is, the calculated statistic, df, and p-value when appropriate.
- Write the null hypotheses in words for the main effects and interaction.
-
Write the null and alternative hypotheses for the test of the variances.
- Report the appropriate statistics (F, df, and p) for the homogeneity of variance test at .10.
- Make a decision about the test of the variances (reject or fail to reject). Provide statistical evidence for your decision.
- Make a final conclusion about the test of the variances (i.e., There is sufficient (or insufficient evidence...).
- Report the cell, column, row, and grand means using the appropriate notation (i.e., as presented in the lecture videos).
- Report and interpret partial eta-squared for all 3 effects.
- a. Is there evidence to indicate that stress level on physical illness symptoms depends on level of support? (yes or no)
b. Report the appropriate statistics in APA format to support your answer and provide statistical evidence.
7. a) Using the MS error from the overall design, is there a difference statistically in stress levels at low levels of social support? (yes or no)
b. If so, who has more physical illnesses?(put N/A if appropriate).
c. Make a decision about a. above (reject or fail to reject) and provide statistical evidence to support your decision.
d. Make a final conclusion for a. (i.e., There is sufficient evidence (or insufficient evidence...).
8. a) Using the MS error from the overall design, is there a difference statistically in stress levels at medium social support? (yes or no)
b. If so, who has more physical illnesses (put N/A if appropriate.)
c. Make a decision about a. above (reject or fail to reject), report the appropriate statistics in APA format, and provide statistical evidence to support your decision.
d. Make a final conclusion for a. (i.e., There is sufficient evidence (or insufficient evidence...).
9. a. Using the MS error from the overall design, is there a difference statistically in stress levels at high social support (yes or no)
b. If so, who has more physical illnesses? (put N/A if appropriate).
c. Make a decision about a. above (reject or fail to reject), report the appropriate statistics in APA format, and provide statistical evidence to support your decision.
d. Make a final conclusion for a. (i.e., There is sufficient evidence (or insufficient evidence...).
10. What can you briefly conclude, in words, about the relationship between stress level and social support, based on questions 7, 8, and 9? In other words, summarize what you found briefly.
