Unit 10 - Factor Analysis

The main purpose of this paper is to conduct a Factor Analysis to the questionnaire inventory of 44 items from the BSRI, for the purpose of data reduction. The data used for the analysis is contained in the factor.sav dataset, and the analysis will be conducted with the aid of the SPSS statistical software package. The factor.sav dataset contains 44 variables from the BSRI inventory, and a total sample size of N = 369.

Formally, the following research question needs to be tested.

Does the BSRI inventory measure 44 independent dimensions or does the inventory measures only a few underlying dimensions?

The null and alternative hypotheses that need to be tested are shown below.

Ho: The BSRI inventory measure 44 independent

Ha: The BSRI inventory measures only a few underlying dimensions

This is your introduction. It doesn’t have a heading that says "Introduction," but this is it. The above hypotheses will be tested using Factor Analysis, using the varimax rotation, using various different criteria for assessing the number of components to be retained.

.

The Eigenvalue Criterion

Using the Eigenvalue criterion consists of choosing components with an associated value that is greater than 1. Table 1 below shows the components extracted.
