t-tests: Make up a data set for two level of an independent variable. State the null and alternative hypotheses

  1. t-tests: Make up a data set for two level of an independent variable. State the null and alternative hypotheses for both tests. Perform an independent and dependent samples t-test on the data set. Write of the reject/fail to reject statements. Find the \(98 \%\) confidence intervals for the independent sample t-test and a \(99 \%\) confidence interval for the dependent samples t-test.
  2. Non-Parametric t-test: Do the non-parametric test for the independent or dependent samples t-test - you can use the same data from #1. Use two calculation methods so you can make sure your solution is correct. (For MW, the \(2^{\text {nd }}\) method is the formula for large samples; for the Wilcoxon, it's the approximation for \(z\) -scores.) Write out the reject/fail to reject statement.
  3. Planned Comparisons: Make up a data set with at least 4 levels of an independent variable. Do the following three comparisons: 1 vs. $3 ; 2$ vs. \(3 / 4\); and 1 vs. \(2 / 3 / 4\) using 2 sets of weights. For example, \(2 / 3\) vs. 4 could be done as \(-.5,-.5,1\) and \(1,1,-2\). Both sets of weights will render the same answer. You will do 6 comparisons on total. Check the significance and explain your results.
  4. Repeated Measures ANOVA: Use the same data set you used for #3. Discuss the difference in error terms (hint - why is one lower than the other). State the null and alternative hypotheses. MAKE A SUMMARY TABLE. Check for homogeneity of variance. Calculate eta-squared. Do a Tukey test and a Scheffe - even if the results are non-significant. Write up your results as you would for publication -- reject/fail to reject for the overall \(\mathrm{F}\) and an interpretation of the post hocs. Anybody who ends up with a negative sum of squares needs to recalculate.
  5. Non-Parametric ANOVA: You can use the data for the RM ANOVA to do the non-parametric ANOVA of your choice. Write out the reject/fail to reject statement.
