  1. The data below refers to information about Peruvian Indians of the Andes Mountains. Create a table of the AGE and YEARS data. Each row gives the age of a Peruvian Indian, and how many years since they migrated from the mountains to the cities. Remember to leave enough rows at the top for your Name, Lab, Course-Section, and Date.

(2) Produce a list of Descriptive Statistics for each of the columns.

  1. Make a standard Stem-Leaf Diagram of YEARS (Using five stems). Type the results into the worksheet or a Word document, but do not use any built-in Excel function.
  2. Produce a Histogram for the AGE data with an Ogive . Use upper boundaries so that you have an interval of 5 years. Be sure to have the tick marks on the horizontal axis align with the points on the Ogive.
  3. Create a Scatter-Plot of the AGE s (Horizontal axis), and YEARS (Vertical axis).

Based upon the above results answer the following,

Questions about Central Tendencies:

  1. What is the Average AGE and the Median YEARS ? Why would you say it is better to use median for YEARS instead of the mean (average)?
  2. From the YEARS Stem-Leaf diagram what is the M od e ? (Give the class mark) Do you like Excel’s Mode better? (Explain) From the AGE Histogram what is the Mode ?
  3. What is the Mid-Range for the YEARS data? Is it similar to the average and median YEARS values?
    Questions about Dispersion:
  4. What is the Range and Interquartile Range (use Ogive or Quartile function) of the AG E data?
  5. What is the Standard Deviation for AGE ?
    Questions about Distribution:
  6. Compute the two intervals: ( M ean – 1 SD ) to ( M ean + 1 SD ) and ( Mean 2 SD ) to ( Mean + 2 SD ) for the AGE data. What percentage of the data would you expect for each of these ranges if this were a Normal distribution? From the Histogram , what percent of the 20 data values fall into each of these two ranges?
  7. Based upon the mean and median for the AGE data which way would you say the data is skewed (Right or Left)? Explain.
  8. What clustering pattern does the Scatter Plot display? (Nearly Circular /Elongated Oval /Almost Linear – Pick closest match) As the age of the Peruvian increases, is there a trend in the years since migrated to city?
    Questions about Position:
  9. How many standard deviations is the AGE of 50 above the mean? (Use z-score )
  10. What is the 10th and 90th Percentile ? (Use Excel’s Percentile function)
