Computer Exercise 5: ANCOVA after controlling for age, does one's choice about how to spend a $\$ 500,000$
Computer Exercise 5: ANCOVA
Question: after controlling for age, does one's choice about how to spend a $\$ 500,000$ gift relate to positive attitudes (total IPA score)?
- Identify covariate, dependent, and independent variables from the question statement.
- Open your dataset.
-
The "gift' variable has 4 groups-1) invest it with brokerage firm; 2) buy vacation home at place of my choice; 3) pay off existing mortgage; and 4) donate whole amount to charity of my choice. Exclude the group # 4 (donate whole amount to charity of my choice), because it has only 33 subjects ( \(4.7 \%\) of total subjects) and may lead to non-equal variances when included in the analysis.
How to Exclude Specific Values from Analysis - Check the assumptions of ANCOVA.
- Mutually exclusive groups
- Homogeneity of variance of groups
- Normality of dependent variable
- The covariate should be a continuous variable
- Linearity assumption: the covariate and the dependent variable must show a linear relationship
- Homogeneity of regression across groups: the direction and strength of the relationship between the covariate and the dependent variable must be similar in each group.
How to Run Regression for Checking Homogeneity of Regression Assumption
5. Run ANCOVA.
6. Interpret SPSS output and write up your findings. Your report includes:
- The results of assumption check
- Your answer to the question. In your answer, please include your observation of how the mean for each group and \(F\) statistic are changed before and after controlling age effect.
