Assignment 5 Case Summary: Correlation & Regression

A few weeks ago, your boss asked you to study patterns that exist in major corporations. You summarized and considered norms in the areas of revenues, profits, assets, stockholders’ equity, market value, earnings, return, and staffing for 50 ranked companies taken from the 1998 Fortune 500. Now you have the task of seeing how these factors relate to one another and finally, for figuring out statistically what factors best predict the ranking of these companies.

Assignment #5 :

Using the database titled "Fortune 50 exercise," do each of the following:

  1. Start by identifying the relationships between pairs of variables. Are they positive or negative? Create a scatterplot for some of these relationships.
  2. Try to determine which variables are the most strongly related to one another. Remember that a strong correlation will have an r value close to 1.0 and a weak correlation will have an r value near zero.
  3. Use multiple regression methods to determine which factor best predicts the ranking provided in the far left-hand column of the database.
  4. Please write a short summary of your methods and findings. Just be sure you don’t write a causal statement from correlational data!
