Assessment Item 2: Correlation
The questionnaire completed by caregivers included the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28; Goldberg, 1981), which is a 28-item self-report measure. The GHQ-28 has four subscales (somatic symptoms; anxiety and insomnia; social dysfunction; and severe depression/suicidal ideation) as well as a total score.
Items were scored using the Likert 0 to 3 system, which is the preferred method for research purposes. The maximum possible score for each subscale is 21, while the minimum is zero. Participants were also asked to rate the effect that the male family member going to prison had on them socially, financially, in terms of health and well-being, as well as the impact as a parent or carer of the children.
Responses were recorded on a 10-point scale (1 = low impact, 10 = high impact).
Research question:
- Is there a relationship between caregivers’ reports of the social, financial, health and parental effects of familial incarceration and their psychological symptoms as measured on the GHQ-28 subscales and total scores?
Answer this question using the data in families (2006). sav . Write up the analyses in a format suitable for the Results section of a research report. You may want to present your results in a table. If so, make sure that you follow the guidelines for a table in Findlay (2003) or in the APA manual. Make sure that you provide some interpretation of your results. Again this should be approximately a page.
