Problem 5 : Parent’s Influence on Drinking

An investigator wanted to determine the impact of parents’ attitude toward drinking alcohol on their daughter’s drinking habits. An SRS of female college sophomores where asked: i) if either parent allowed you to drink alcohol around him or her?, and ii) how many drinks do you typically have in a drinking session?

  1. Does the attitude or behavior of the parent make a statistically significant DIFFERENCE in the average number of drinks per session the daughters consume? (are the means for the 2 groups DIFFERENT?)
This data set also allows us to determine what proportion of female students have at least one parent who allows them to drink around him or her. Use the data to construct a 98% Confidence Interval for this proportion. Are we safe in using the Large-Sample formula or should we use the Plus-Four formula? Calculate the interval using both methods.
