Using the Monitoring the Future survey, develop a null hypothesis and an alternative (research) hypothesis

  1. Using the Monitoring the Future survey, develop a null hypothesis and an alternative (research) hypothesis to the following research question: What is the relationship between gender and marijuana use? In your write-up, include the following information: your null and alternative hypotheses; the means of marijuana use for each category of the independent variable; the t-statistic, degrees of freedom, and the significance level; and finally, both technical and substantive interpretations of the findings. Be sure to write in paragraph form as you would in the "Results" section of an article. Please do not merely list figures or fail to interpret results.

  2. Using the College Alcohol Study, perform a test for the difference between means for whites and African Americans on current alcohol use. As in question #1, include the following information: your null and alternative hypotheses; the means of current alcohol use for each category of the independent variable; the t-statistic, degrees of freedom, and the significance level; and finally, both technical and substantive interpretations of the findings. Be sure to write in paragraph form as you would in the "Results" section of an article. Please do not merely list figures or fail to interpret results.
  3. Using the Class Profile Survey, choose your own two variables you wish to test for a difference between means. Follow the same guidelines as questions #1 and #2 for writing up your results.
