Rosner Table 11.1: Simple Linear Regression
Greene and Touchstone studied the relationship between estriol level and birthweight for 31 women. Please complete the problem using SPSS.
RQ: Does estriol (mg/24 hours) predict birthweight (g/100) in infants?
Ho: \[\beta \] SSI = 0 (The beta weight for estriol is equal to zero)
HA: \[\beta \] SSI \[\ne \] 0
The Data:
| Participant | Estriol (mg/24 hr) | Birthweight (g/100) | Participant | Estriol (mg/24 hr) | Birthweight (g/100) |
| 1 | 7 | 25 | 17 | 17 | 32 |
| 2 | 9 | 25 | 18 | 25 | 32 |
| 3 | 9 | 25 | 19 | 27 | 34 |

| 16 | 16 | 32 |
Step 1: Create the Variables
1.Start SPSS.
2. Click the Variable View tab.
3. Enter the variable names Estriol and Birthweight in the first two rows.
Step 2: Enter the Data by clicking the Data View tab and entering the information.
Step 3: Analyze the Data
- From the menu bar, select Analyze>Regression>Linear .
- Linear Regression dialog box opens, select the variable Birthweight and move it to the Dependent box.
- Select the variable Estriol and move it to the Independent(s) box.
- Click statistics and select Descriptives , Confidence Intervals, Model Fit, and Estimates .
- Click C ontinue .
- Click OK .
Step 4: Interpret the Data using APA style. Write the regression equation. What is the 95% confidence interval for birthweight?
