A research group was interested in the levels of physical activity (PA) in school children during the school day and the relationship between PA and overweight and obesity. A stratified random sample of school children was selected to participate in a study to measure PA during the school day (between 9:15 – 3:15). Years 3-6 from the primary and 8-11 from the secondary school sectors were selected for the study. Gender, age, height, weight, body mass index and ethnicity were also recorded. The data are contained in the SPSS data file ‘SoT Schools PA.sav’ and described in the WORD file ‘Data description – SoT Schools data.doc’. Children in the sample wore an accelerometer throughout the day, which recorded minute by minute activity. An index of total daily activity was calculated and is stored in the variable TotalN . An estimate of the total amount of energy used in PA during the school day was also calculated for each child and this is stored in the variable Kcal .

A Consultant in Public Health Medicine was interested to investigate whether Asian patients with diabetes received a worse standard of care than non-Asians. Treatment details were recorded from 774 patients with diabetes.  The data were collected from general practices and not all practices supplied data for every field.   Criteria for high quality care were judged on whether the patients had received the recommended check ups (e.g. feet, eyes, BMI, smoking status, glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) etc.) and treatments. The data are contained in the SPSS data file ‘Diabetes care.sav’ and described in the WORD file ‘Data description – Diabetes care.doc’.
