Factor Analysis of the BSRI Instrument

The objective of this paper is to conduct a Factor Analysis to the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) instrument, developed in 1974 by Sandra Bem with the purpose of measuring masculine, feminine and androgynous personality traits among men and women.

The BRSI instrument consists of 44 items, measured as Likert-type variables ranging from 1 to 7, with a higher value of item indicating "more" of item measured.

Methodology

A Factor Analysis was conducted on the BSRI instrument. For that purpose of the analysis, a dataset ( factor.sav ) with 44 items and N = 369 valid cases was used. The purpose of the analysis is to determine the optimal number of factors based on the four most traditional criteria: eigenvalues, explained variability, scree plot and residuals.
