Assignment 3
The data set is a subset of the first study in my dissertation. I was examining people’s physiological hyperarousal (PH). This was measured at two time points (PHAT and PHAT2). At Time 2, people underwent an emotion manipulation (variable = INDUCT, 1 = anxiety-induction, 2 = neutral, 3 = depression-induction).
For each problem, begin by stating null and alternative hypotheses (state this in words rather than using symbols). State your assumptions and which statistical test you are using. Test the assumptions when possible; assume the data were randomly selected and that the each case is independent of each subsequent case. If you violate the assumptions, comment on why you think this might be. Report your descriptive statistics. Test the hypotheses and reach a conclusion.
Your homework should be written in paragraphs and you should describe things in detail. Use the Wilkinson article to guide what you report. Your write-up should be something like a results section in an article rather than a list of bullet points. Figures are encouraged but not required (we did NOT talk about them in class – play with SPSS, it doesn’t bite). At the end of your paper, include your syntax as an appendix.
If you have any questions, please e-mail me and include your syntax.
- I think that individuals who underwent an anxiety manipulation will have a higher physiological hyperarousal than those who underwent a depression manipulation. Am I right? The manipulation happened at Time 2.
- Because there was an induction, I think, on average, individuals will increase in their physiological hyperarousal over time. Am I right?
- Suppose I’ve done some research on physiological hyperarousal and I think that the average score at Time 1 should be 28.00. Test this hypothesis. Am I right?
- EXTRA CREDIT (equal to one problem above): Run problem #2 again, but as an independent groups problem. This will require some thought on how SPSS handles variables and some playing with the software. What do you find? How are the two different? Be sure to comment on p-values and power.
