This assignment should be completed using the program SPSS. (This means that any statistics / graphs requested must be obtained using SPSS.) For full credit, you must include the requested output from SPSS. I recommend copying the output from SPSS and pasting it into a word processor. Make sure to state your hypotheses, how you made your decision about the null, and conclusion for any hypothesis test. There are 5 points possible.
Problem 1: In a study of jury behavior, two samples of participants were provided details about a trial in which the defendant was obviously guilty. Although group 2 received the same details as group 1 , the second group was also told that some evidence had been withheld from the jury by the judge. Later the participants were asked to recommend a jail sentence. The length of term suggested by each participant is presented here.
Is there a significant difference between the two groups in their responses? Test at the .05 level of significant using a two-tailed test.
Problem 2: The thematic Apperception Test (TAT) presents subjects with ambiguous pictures and asks them to tell a story about them. These stories can be scored in any number of ways. Werner, Stabenau, and Pollin (1970) asked mothers of 20 Normal and 20 Schizophrenic children to complete the TAT and scored for the number of stories (out of 10 ) that exhibited a positive parent-child relationship. The data follows.:
Normal: 8,4,6,3,1,4,4,6,4,2,2,1,1,4,3,3,2,6,3,4
Schizophrenic: 2,1,1,3,2,7,2,1,3,1,0,2,4,2,3,3,0,1,2,2
Is there a significant difference between normals and schizophrenics in the number of positive stories? Test at the .05 level of significant using a two-tailed test.
