Understandable Statistics

This first assignment requires you to obtain a histogram and ogive and present your data using excel (or open office).

  1. Go to http://college.cengage.com/mathematics/brase/understandable_statistics/9e/resources/datasets/sv/index.html and download the sunspot data.
  2. You will create a frequency distribution with 5 bins. What is your class width? Fill in the table:

************************************************

class  |  lower limit  | upper limit | lower boundary | upper boundary | frequency | cumulative

3. Present your table graphically using excel and its histogram capabilities (as discussed in Lecture 2).

4. Create an ogive as follows: For each of your 5 bins enter your class boundaries (there are of course 6 boundaries starting from lower boundary first class to upper boundary 5th class) and the associated cumulative frequencies side by side in two columns. Now create a scatterplot of these pairs. Feel free to add appropriate labels for your axes to make the chart easier to read. (Note: to produce a scatter plot in Excel 2007 you select your data, Insert->Scatter then choose Scatter with Smooth Lines and Markers. In Excel 2003 very similar: Insert->Chart->Scatter)

Price: $8.31
Solution: The downloadable solution consists of 5 pages, 331 words and 2 charts.
