Task A . One Way ANOVA

For this task you will use the Drug Court dataset available on Blackboard. A researcher hypothesizes that the average number of prior drug arrests is significantly different across race groups. Perform a one-way ANOVA for race and the number of prior drug arrests. Request descriptive statistics and post hoc tests.

Answer the following questions.

  1. What is the mean # of prior drug arrests for each of the race groups in this dataset?
  2. What is the null hypothesis? According to the above results, should the researcher reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis?
  3. Write a sentence describing the results of the F test.
  4. According to the results of the ANOVA test, would it be appropriate to report the results of the post hoc tests?

Task B . Two-Way ANOVA

For this task you will again use the Drug Court dataset available on Blackboard. Now our researcher would like to determine if race AND gang membership have any relationship to the average number of prior drug arrests. Run a two-way ANOVA for race and gang membership on number of prior drug arrests. Request descriptive statistics and estimates of effect size.

Answer the following questions.

  1. Does race have a significant effect on # of prior drug arrests? Explain why or why not.
  2. Does gang membership have a significant effect on # of prior drug arrests? Explain why or why not.
  3. Is there an interaction between the independent variables? Explain how you know.
  4. Write a sentence describing the results of the two-way ANOVA.

BONUS QUESTION : If we find a statistically significant difference between groups in a hypothesis test, we would want to report an effect size value to describe the size of the effect found in the test. Using the output from Task B, report the effect size values for any statistically significant effects (EX: There is a statistically significant effect of ___, eta-squared = ___).
