Split Plot ANOVA
The student from Assignment #5 decided to follow up her study of the effects of coffee on performance on a calculus exam over time. This time she wanted to know if caffeine affected males and females differently. She recruited 6 males and 6 females, all who reported being regular coffee drinkers. Each subject consumed one large cup of coffee. As in Assignment #6, at three time points following coffee consumption, each subject underwent a learning task followed by a memory test.
As in Assignment #5, in the learning task the subjects were shown a list of 25 digit-pairs and were instructed to add the two digits and call out the sum to the experimenter. At the end of the list the experimenter presented subjects with a list of 100 digit-pairs. The task was to identify whether each of the 100 digit-pairs were "old" (i.e. were in the original list of 25), or were "new" (i.e. were not in the original list). The number of correctly identified digit-pairs (out of 100) were recorded. The test was repeated 5 min, 15 min and 30 min following coffee consumption.
Conduct an analysis to address the student’s research question. Include a graphical display, and if necessary conduct follow-up tests between individual means. What conclusions should be drawn? Again, comment on the design of the study.
