Overview

You are to select a data set from SPSS (statistical package for the social sciences), run both a descriptive analysis and an inferential analysis, and then write a narrative summary and interpretation of your findings. SPSS provides a wide variety of sample data. One of the first decisions you must make in this assignment is to select a data set that has public health significance.

Descriptive Analysis and Summary

When you have selected a dataset, you will:

  1. Run a full range of descriptive analyses, to include minimum and maximum number for each variable, along with the variance, standard deviation, and frequency.
  2. Visually compare the standard deviation with the mean, to check for flags on values that are out of range. Clean the data, addressing outliers, as appropriate.
  3. Run the analyses in SPSS, and cut and paste all findings from the output file into a Word document.

When you have completed the descriptive analysis, write a narrative summary (in the same Word document), in which you interpret your findings. You should discuss the inferential analysis you will be running next. How do your findings in this analysis affect the decisions you are making for the inferential analysis?

PART 2: Based on your findings in the descriptive analysis, select and perform the appropriate test. Run the test in SPSS and cut-and-paste all findings from the output file into a Word document. When you have completed the inferential analysis, write a narrative summary (in the same Word document) in which you interpret your findings. In the final section of your narrative, you will discuss how working with vital statistics and public health records would be similar and dissimilar to the analyses you have just completed.

Objectives

To successfully complete this assignment, you will be expected to:

  1. Select a data set that is representative of vital statistics or public health data.
  2. Identify problems and issues associated with the use of vital statistics and other public health records.
  3. Choose and apply the appropriate statistical methods for performing inferential analysis on the data you have selected.
  4. Writes a narrative report that accurately interprets the results of descriptive and inferential statistical analysis.
