In your capacity as an analyst for Raytheon and you receive a request from a commander in the field who is trying to determine which of three units under their command has the most effective training climate. You were able

to obtain data on 20 randomly selected junior enlisted who were on their first

assignment in the military each of these three units for a total of 60 records (see Data Set 1). The data you received was limited to the number of days each

soldier has been in the unit and an independent assessment of each soldier’s

effectiveness on that day made by the units’ immediate superior in chain of command.

  1. Using the data from all 60 soldiers, give a prediction at alpha (α) = 0.05 of the range of effectiveness a soldier should be after being in a unit for 120 days. How valid do you feel this prediction interval is?
  2. Repeat your prediction at alpha (α) = 0.05 of the range of effectiveness a
soldier could be after being in a unit for 120 days. This time only use the 20 soldiers from
Unit 1. How valid do you feel this prediction interval is?
  3. Compare the slopes, intercepts and mean effectiveness of the the three
units. What observations can you make. Is it reasonable to compare these slopes and
intercepts? What useful analyses can you provide the commander on these three units?
  4. Plot the three units’ residual plots with Individual Effectiveness Residuals on
the Y axis and Individual Effectiveness Predicted on the X axis. Evaluate if a linear
regression is appropriate for these three models. If a linear model is not appropriate
suggest a model that may be more appropriate.
(For Questions 5 - 8) The number of anonymous tips alerting US forces to possible insurgent
activity over a month in a certain area is available with the number of known attempted suicide
bombers and confirmed IEDs in Data Set 2.
  5. Is there any evidence to support an association between anonymous tips and
    suicide bomber or IED activity?
  6. Your boss recently read a brochure about your graduate program and thinks
you should predict the number of anonymous tips next month using this month’s IED
numbers, Suicide Bomber numbers and the interaction between the two. Show results
and conclusions of such an analysis. Comment on its usefulness.
  7. Construct a different model you think would be useful in predicting future
number of Anonymous Tips for the upcoming month.
  8. Your boss wants you to create a model to predict the number of suicide

bombers in the upcoming month. Use the data available to you to predict the suicide

bombers and suggest data that you think would work better to predict suicide bombers.
