The Magic of the Numbers

Aren’t all numbers whole numbers?

Not all numbers are considered whole numbers. Any number that involves the use of a decimal point to correctly identify it does not fit into this category. However, most numbers are considered to fit into this category. Mathematics involves many complicated formulas and processes to make it work. This should not be considered one of the more difficult. It is very basic to understand and the concept is traditionally taught at the second grade level or earlier. The introduction of counting gives the student their first introduction to this concept.

The importance of whole numbers

All fields of mathematics use whole numbers in every aspect. Any field that deals with the process and formulas involving numbers will relate the number to being whole or not. This makes it increasingly important to know what the term means. That is why the concept is introduced to elementary students. This allows them to understand this basic concept at the earliest age. Since all following math courses will deal with its properties, the understanding of this aspect proves critical to the understanding of many formulas and functions used in many stages of mathematics.

It would be difficult for anyone to find a study in math that does not relate the information gained in terms of whole numbers. Even if the answer is provided as a non-whole number, most people will relate the term to its closest whole number. If you score a 98.8% on a test, you will probably tell your parents that you got a 99%. Most answers are relayed through speech using only whole numbers.

What are Real Numbers? The Definition

Real numbers refer to any number that can be represented with any amount of decimal notation, including those that require an infinite decimal expansion. Real numbers include all integers, both positive and negative, as well as all fractions. They include both rational and irrational numbers. It may be useful to use a number line to help you define the term further. If you can compare the number in relation to other numbers, then it fits into this category.

Most common operations of real numbers

There are basic operations that involve real numbers. They include the addition of two numbers and the subtraction of them. Multiplying them together and dividing them from one another are also common operations. The most confusing operation may be exponentiation. This involves using the value as the exponent of another value.

Uses of real numbers

Most forms of mathematics use real numbers in their applications. Calculus, trigonometry and statistics all use them on a regular basis. These numbers are simply inserted to the applicable functions and formulas to produce answers to problems. The use of these values is critical to the proper use of any form of mathematics.

Real numbers are also used in the field of Physical Sciences since most measurements in this field always comprise approximations of these digits. Another field that makes use of real numbers is Computers. Most commonly, this field represents calculations which represent a particular subset of the rational or irrational numbers via either fixed-point numbers or floating point numbers. These are then used as an approximation with regard to other nearby real values. Quite a few programming languages like AppleScript also use "real values" to describe their primary numeric data type.
